Men’s Football Coaching

This page will give coaches helpful tips in working with the male player and in Coaching Football.

Principles of Play

Quick reference for coaches. Behaviour-led principles organised by phase of play.

ATTACK

  • Create space early (width + depth) before breaking lines

  • Support in threes (inside/outside/ahead) & move after pass

  • Play forward when it’s on; reset when it’s not

  • Fix defenders → free teammates (create 2v1s / third-man runs)

  • Finish with intent (shot selection + follow-ups)

TRANSITION DEF→ATT

  • Win ▸ Look ▸ Go (secure → scan forward → attack space)

  • First support triangle arrives immediately

TRANSITION ATT→DEF

  • React ▸ Hunt ▸ Delay (3–5 second counter-press)

  • Nearest 3 engage; rest recover shape & protect middle

DEFENCE

  • Protect the middle/scoring zone first; force wide

  • Pressure the ball with roles (1 slows, 2 wins, 3 covers)

  • Track runners and hand over responsibly (communication)

  • Contest contact & win breaks/second ball

RESTARTS (KICKOUTS)

  • Set early with calls/roles; create the free receiver

  • Win first OR win break; play with purpose after the win
